The Jon Cromer Memorial Scholarship

Monique White, Organizer of the Jon Cromer Memorial Walk/Run

Fellow classmates at Logan were at a loss when Jon Cromer, a Tri-3 student suddenly passed away last May. “At that time, we held a back-to-school barbecue to benefit his family, but we knew we wanted to do something more,” said Monique White, now a Tri-8 student.

Last fall, Jon’s classmates organized a committee to determine how they could help.

With the guidance of James Paine, PhD, assistant vice president for student affairs and dean of students, and Jennifer Reed, MBA, director of marketing and public relations, the class officers landed on the idea of organizing a 2-mile memorial walk/run on the Logan campus.

“Our goal was to have a fun evening with food, games and music so families could come and enjoy. As we started discussing, we also had another thought,” Monique said. “Even though we had only been together with Jon for a few trimesters, we all knew he would have made a great doctor. We thought, ‘why not create a scholarship in honor of him?’”

The committee sought input from school administration, friends and family as far as how a scholarship would be set up and awarded. The student committee decided that participation fees from the memorial run would be collected to create a scholarship for one deserving Logan student.

“In putting together the event, we were blown away by the generosity and efforts of Logan’s staff and faculty who helped set up the course, purchased the t-shirts and helped with the marketing and promotion of the event,” said Monique, adding that Lucky’s Market and Dierbergs grocery stores also provided donations for food and drinks.

On Oct. 17, a group of 70 people gathered at Logan to honor Jon, and a total of $1,500 was collected for the student scholarship. The class officers said they could not have been more pleased with turnout and outpouring of support from Logan.

“I wasn’t surprised at all that the last people to leave that evening were students from our class,” Monique said. “It’s a blessing to be surrounded by such a kind group; we have a very close class with truly wonderful people.”
