Thanks to the International Sports Chiropractic Foundation Scholarship, J. Alex Coulson, DC, MS and Jorge Segall Bessudo, DC have the opportunity to further their education in Logan University’s Master of Science in Sports Science & Rehabilitation (MSSSR) program. The full tuition scholarship is offered by the Federation of Sports Chiropractic/ Fédération Internationale de Chiropratique du Sport (FICS) in partnership with Logan.
To qualify for the scholarship, an applicant must be a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) and a FICS member who has completed or almost finished their International Certificate in Sports Chiropractic (ICSC). The annual call for applications takes place in August, and winners are announced in November.
“I had applied for this scholarship for several years, so to get it this time was a huge honor,” Dr. Coulson said. “It felt great knowing the hard work I put in paid off and that I would have the chance to enroll in Logan’s amazing MSSSR program.”
To earn the scholarship, applicants must also be highly involved with FICS or its partner, National Chiropractic Sports Council (NCSC). Dr. Coulson was part of the FICS delegation of chiropractors treating athletes at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Alabama, and serves on the FICS Education Committee as a representative of his local NCSC in Canada. In addition to providing chiropractic care at several international FICS events, Dr. Segall Bessudo has been a member of the Mexican Federation of Sports Chiropractic for two decades, serving as president for the last six years.
“As president of the Mexican Federation of Sports Chiropractic, I represent the chiropractic profession to the Mexican government, organize seminars and conferences, and work with various sports organizations to make sure chiropractors are available at their events,” Dr. Segall Bessudo said. “I am also in charge of reporting to FICS on what is happening in Mexico regarding sports chiropractic.”
As chiropractors treating athletes on a regular basis, Drs. Coulson and Segall Bessudo enrolled in Logan’s MSSSR program to better serve their patients. Dr. Coulson works with a sports medicine clinic called Modern Health & Performance in London, Ontario, as well as the London Majors minor league baseball team and the University of Western Ontario track and field teams.
“I chose Logan’s MSSSR because I wanted to improve my skills in treating sports injuries,” Dr. Coulson said. “Earning this degree could also help me qualify for the Royal College of Chiropractic Sports Sciences (Canada)’s prestigious Sport Sciences Residency Program. Overall, I’m confident it will help me continue building my reputation as a sports chiropractor in Canada.”
Both Drs. Coulson and Segall Bessudo would recommend Logan’s MSSSR program to prospective students.
“The online program allows me to stay in Mexico City with my growing family and continue running my chiropractic practice because I can finish coursework on my own time,” Dr. Segall Bessudo said. “Plus, the professors are excellent. They quickly answer my questions and give great feedback on assignments. Logan’s staff are also supportive. Whether they are helping me enroll or figuring out which courses I need to take, they are always nice and polite. Taking an online program can be scary if you have never done it before, but at Logan, you never feel like you are alone.”
