James Toombs, MD, FAAFP

Medical Director, Logan University Physician Assistant Program

Dr. James Toombs, MD, joins us as the Medical Director for Logan’s Physician Assistant Program. He brings decades of experience working in veteran’s health and pain rehabilitation to the role where he will be assisting with the development and implementation of the program while helping to secure clinical site placements for students.

Dr. Toombs completed his undergraduate work at Southeast Missouri State University, his post-baccalaureate studies at University of Missouri, St. Louis, and his Doctorate of Medicine from the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine. Afterward, he spent several years completing his residency in Family Medicine and a fellowship in Pain Medicine before practicing in numerous medical settings throughout the state. He has also gone on to receive many awards and accolades during his career including Medical Staff Member of the Year from the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Hospital in Columbia, MO, and the Resident Teacher Award from the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine. Dr. Toombs is a Fellow of the American Academy of Family Practice.

Dr. Toombs had a parallel military career spanning nearly 37 years. He joined the USMC Reserves in 1979 and retired as a Colonel from the Missouri National Guard in 2016. He deployed for Desert Storm as a UH-60 pilot and subsequently as a Field Surgeon in during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2004, 2006 and 2009.  Dr. Toombs’ awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star, Air Medal, and Meritorious Service Medal.

Dr. Toombs’ passion for guiding future medical professionals and helping others to live a life without pain led him to the Medical Director position at Logan. He looks forward to helping to provide support to such a valuable medical field.
