How Logan University’s Master’s Program Helped Lori Powers Advance in Nursing Informatics

For Lori Powers, BSN, RN, MS (’25) the journey to Logan University’s Master of Science in Health Informatics (MSHI) program began with a strong foundation in nursing. A graduate of Texas Tech University with a bachelor’s degree in nursing, Lori built her career as a registered nurse in both the emergency room and gastroenterology, gaining most of her professional experience in gastroenterology offices and endoscopy centers.

In recent years, Lori transitioned into the growing field of clinical informatics. As part of the Clinical Informatics Team at GI Alliance, she provides electronic medical record (EMR) training, manages IT tickets, supports EMR projects for new physician groups, and collaborates with providers and staff to optimize workflow and documentation.

“My nursing background combined with informatics experience allows me to bridge the gap between clinical care and technology,” she explained.

When researching graduate programs, Lori explored several universities before finding her fit at Logan.

“After my call with the Logan admissions team, I knew it was the right fit for me,” she said. “The conversation left me feeling supported and confident that Logan was the right place to pursue my degree.”.

The MSHI program appealed to Lori because of its comprehensive curriculum covering project management, data analytics, systems analysis and workflow optimization.

“Each of these topics directly aligned with my career and professional growth goals, so I knew the content would be relevant to me,” she said.

Having recently graduated with her MSHI degree in August 2025, Lori describes her time at Logan as engaging and rewarding.

“Every class built upon the last, creating a clear picture of how different elements of informatics connect and apply to real-world practice,” Lori said.

In addition to the curriculum, she appreciated the supportive, approachable faculty and enjoyed building connections with peers across multiple courses.

Earning her MSHI degree has already advanced Lori’s work in informatics, expanding her expertise, strengthening her ability to support providers and contributing to more efficient workflows that lead to better patient care. Looking ahead, she’s confident the degree will continue to open doors to leadership roles in clinical informatics, project management and data-driven healthcare innovation.

Through her nursing foundation, informatics expertise and Logan education, Lori is helping shape the future of healthcare delivery – one project, one provider and one patient at a time.
