Several members of Logan’s faculty and staff attended and presented at the 7th International Convention on Physical Activity and Sports (AFIDE) the week of November 20th in Havana, Cuba.
This year’s convention centered on sports and human development and had the participation of 423 foreign representatives from 35 countries and 300 Cubans.

On December 1, Logan University will be recognizing Human Rights Day with a short presentation and celebration from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in The Purser Center.
Sponsored by Logan’s Diversity Committee and International Student Association, the event is free and open to all Logan students, faculty and staff. It will also feature a complimentary “Taste of the World” from local St. Louis restaurants.
Human Rights Day commemorates the day in 1948 that the United Nations General Assembly adopted the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a document that states the inalienable rights which everyone is inherently entitled to as a human being regardless of race, color, religion, sex, language, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other status.
Most notably, Article 25, section 1 states:
“Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care …”
Herbert Caldwell, Logan’s Diversity Compliance Officer, says it makes sense that Logan should celebrate this day, given the institution’s contribution to health care here in St. Louis and beyond.
“Logan has always aligned itself with the tenets of humanity, service and brotherhood as espoused in the declaration,” Caldwell said. “On this day, we will bring a global event down to the local level by recognizing the importance of providing more access to quality, conservative and whole-person care to those both within and outside of our reach.
Caldwell said he is looking forward to having a broader discussion with the Logan community on what human rights means and how we can continue to advocate for the health and wellbeing of all individuals.
Dr. Dana Underkofler-Mercer, Associate Professor, received her Emerson Excellence in Teaching Award on Sunday, November 12th.
This award recognizes educators throughout St. Louis who are examples of excellence in their field.
Congratulations, Dr. Mercer!
