Adam W. Carter, PhD, LCPC, NCC, CCMHC, FT

Program Director

Dr. Adam Carter serves as Program Director of the Clinical Mental Health Counseling program at Logan University, where he leads the development, implementation, and ongoing growth of the program. His work includes curriculum design, faculty recruitment and supervision, accreditation preparation, student support, community partnership development, and overall program administration. He also teaches and mentors students, ensuring the program prepares future counselors to meet the evolving mental health needs of diverse individuals, families, and communities.

Dr. Carter’s career spans roles as a counselor educator, clinical supervisor, administrator, and practicing clinician across university, nonprofit, crisis response, and community mental health settings. He has extensive experience in trauma-informed care, crisis intervention, grief and loss counseling, play therapy, clinical supervision, and advocacy for underserved populations. Prior to joining Logan, Dr. Carter served as Chief Executive Officer of Providing Access to Help (PATH), a nonprofit organization focused on crisis intervention, behavioral health services, housing supports, and community-based mental health programs.

Dr. Carter earned his PhD in Counseling from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, his MS in Mental Health Counseling from the University of Wisconsin–Stout, and his BA in Education Studies from Berea College. He is a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor, National Certified Counselor, Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor, and Fellow in Thanatology.

His professional service includes election as President of the Illinois Counselor Educators and Supervisors and leadership roles within national counseling organizations. He is the recipient of the Fred Rogers Institute Helper Award (2023) and previously served as Scholar in Residence for the American Counseling Association (2014–2015).

Dr. Carter’s scholarly and professional interests include counselor education and supervision, trauma-informed counseling, play therapy, crisis intervention, grief and loss, LGBTQIA+ affirming practice, and expanding access to mental health services.
