Meet Dr. Stephen Nickell, Athletic Training Program Director

Stephen Nickell, EdD, LAT, ATC is Logan’s Sports and Exercise Science Department Chair and Master’s in Athletic Training Program Director. When Dr. Nickell joined the Logan University team in summer 2018 as the program director for the Master’s of Science in Sports Science & Rehabilitation, he had a goal in mind: to actively work to bring more programs to Logan beyond chiropractic and to work across all of the University’s programs to create more interprofessional opportunities for students.

Fast forward two years later, Logan is thrilled to introduce a brand-new Master’s in Athletic Training program under the direction of Dr. Nickell. As program director, Dr. Nickell oversees the curriculum for the program, which includes designing it, maintaining course descriptions and syllabi, and hiring and evaluating the professors who teach these courses.

“The field of athletic training is growing beyond traditional athletic settings into performing arts, military, hospitals, industrial settings and more,” said Dr. Nickell. “We have a unique opportunity at Logan to expose our students to this mix of settings and provide them the skills necessary to be successful in these emerging fields.”

Logan University’s Master’s in Athletic Training is the only program offered by a chiropractic and health sciences institution, affording access to Logan’s state-of-the-art science facilities and network of clinical partners. Logan’s unique offering is ideal for those seeking careers as health care providers for people who need to perform at their personal best, including elite athletes and those working in physically demanding industrial careers.

“From the sidelines of prominent Midwestern universities to a variety of non-traditional health care settings, Logan students will receive more hands-on clinical experience than most other athletic training programs,” said Dr. Nickell. “Following graduation, Logan-educated athletic trainers will be prepared to serve in many health care capacities, working to prevent injury, treat emergencies and return patients to their active status using the most current evidence-based therapies.”

Prior to Logan, Dr. Nickell served as the athletic training program director at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, Missouri, and as the program director of athletic training and sports science for Urbana University in Urbana, Ohio. Earlier in his career, he was a clinical athletic trainer for a school district in his home state of Ohio.

Dr. Nickell is a member of the National Athletic Trainers’ Association, the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a site visitor for the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education. He graduated with his Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training from Ohio University in 1999, his master’s degree from Rider University in New Jersey in 2001 and his Doctorate of Education at the University of Missouri in 2017.

Submission of the self-study and completion of an onsite review does not guarantee that the program will become accredited. Students who graduate from the program prior to accreditation WILL NOT be eligible to sit for the credentialing examination for athletic trainers and will not be eligible for licensure in most state
