  • Overview

    In 2017, the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) invited colleges, universities and organizations sponsoring nutrition and dietetics programs to apply to its early adopter demonstration program, which will test different education models to see if they are effective in producing RDs who are prepared for emerging health care needs.

    Logan was among the first 21 applications accepted and will be offering one of seven new graduate-level dietetics programs in the country. Logan’s RD program will be offered online through the Master of Science degree in Nutrition & Human Performance starting in fall 2019.

    Whereas a bachelor’s degree was previously required to practice as a dietitian nutritionist, by 2024 the new model will require RDs to earn a master’s degree to gain the greater depth of knowledge and skills that the industry needs. The goal of this change is to prepare RDs to fill gaps within the health care system and to increase RD integration within medical teams.

    To meet the new requirements, Logan’s program provides a competency based curriculum with an online core coursework, specialized courses in the RD track, and an integrated supervised experiential learning (SEL) experience at Health Centers located in St. Louis. The dietetics track will bring much-needed medical nutrition therapy and nutrition education to clinics serving patients with many chronic conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and obesity, to name a few.

    Logan will prepare students to meet the challenges in the health care system today and in the future, including the need to develop skills working in interprofessional teams while providing opportunities to achieve expanded roles in health promotion, disease prevention, and intervention.

    Logan University, College of Health Sciences MS in Nutrition and Health Sciences RD track is an accredited demonstration program under the Future Education Model Accreditation Standards.

    The Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) released the Future Education Model Accreditation Standards for programs in nutrition and dietetics (see www.eatrightpro.org/FutureModel ). The successful completion of all graduate course work and supervised experiential learning will lead to a Master of Science (MS) degree in Nutrition & Human Performance and receipt of a Verification Statement. Program graduates will be eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) credentialing exam to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist.

    Program graduates should check licensing laws in the state in which they intend to practice. For the State of Missouri, passing the CDR Registration Exam for Registered Dietitian Nutritionists and successful submission of a licensing application and fee will result in licensure (LD) in the State of Missouri.

  • Program Highlights

    Welcome to the Master of Science in Nutrition & Human Performance (MS-NHP) program, dietetics track. The MSNHP degree is an interdisciplinary, comprehensive graduate program designed to analyze diet and health status, assess nutrition deficiencies and offer clients evidence-based nutrition and lifestyle recommendations. Students who successfully complete the Dietetics track will be prepared to assess and design nutrition plans to maximize human performance, manage nutrition programs, and provide clinical nutrition expertise as an integral member of a collaborative healthcare team.

    The recipient of the MSNHP degree will have advanced knowledge of nutrition and how to maximize human performance through the holistic integration of nutrition biochemistry, human metabolism and metabolic processes, health promotion and wellness, as well as the research methodologies used in nutrition. Graduates find careers in public health, education, nutrition and health communications, as well as consulting positions in nutrition-specific industries and businesses in private and public sectors designed to maximize human performance.

    The program provides the academic background necessary to complete several outside certifications. MSNHP students who successfully complete the Dietetics track and receive a Verification Statement will be eligible to sit for the national dietitian nutritionist registration exam in order to earn the RDN credential. Emphasis is placed on the development of practical knowledge, understandings, and skills for a holistic and personalized approach to providing meaningful client-centered consultations.

    Program Goals and Objectives

    Goal 1. The MS NHP program, dietetics concentration will prepare students to become competent entry level registered dietitian nutritionists.

    Objective 1.1a . At least 80% of MSNHP Dietetics concentration interns will complete the program within 3 years (150% of time to planned completion)

    Objective 1.1b. At least 80% of part-time MSNHP Dietetics track interns will complete the program within 5 years (150% of time to planned completion)

    Objective 1.2 . Over a five-year period, at least 80% of program graduates in the Dietetics concentration will take the Commission on Dietetics Registration (CDR) credentialing exam for dietitian nutritionists within 12 months of program completion.

    Objective 1.3 . Over a five-year period, the pass rate for program graduates in the Dietetics concentration taking the registration examination for dietitian nutritionists will be > 80%.

    Goal 2. The MS NHP program, dietetics concentration will prepare graduates with the skills necessary to effectively practice in nutrition-specific industries and businesses in private and public sectors designed to maximize human performance.

    Objective 2.1 . At least 80% of employed MSNHP Dietetics concentration graduates who respond to a survey will rate themselves as prepared or very well prepared ( > 3 on a 4-point scale) for their first dietetics-related position.

    Objectives 2.2 . Over a five-year period, at least 90% of program graduates in the Dietetics concentration who seek employment will be employed within 12 months of program completion

    Objective 2.3 . Over a five-year period, at least 80% of employers responding to a survey will rate their satisfaction as satisfied or highly satisfied ( > 3 on a 4-point scale) with the preparation of program graduates in the Dietetics concentration for entry-level practice.

    Goal 3. The MS NHP program, dietetics concentration will produce graduates who recognize the importance of ongoing professional development as a means to benefit and serve society.

    Objective 3.1 . Over a five-year period, at least 80% of program graduates who respond to an alumni survey will report being a member of a professional organization.

    Objective 3.2 . Over a five-year period, at least 90% of program graduates who respond to an alumni survey will report actively seeking current research findings for application in their practice.

    Objective 3.3 . Over a five-year period, at least 50% of program graduates who respond to an alumni survey will report actively seeking specialty certification in nutrition/dietetics or a related field.

    Fall: must be postmarked by June 15

    The maximum class size for the RD track is 15 for each entrance (Fall, and Spring). All applicants who submit the requisite application materials and meet the admission criteria will be reviewed by the Selection Committee. The candidates chosen by the Selection Committee with the highest scores on a point based entrance rubric will be required to participate in a virtual interview via a video conferencing platform.

    Admissions Requirements

    An applicant must have:

    · Earned a baccalaureate degree or higher from an accredited college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (USDE) or the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). If the baccalaureate degree was earned at an unaccredited institution, an accredited post-baccalaureate degree is an acceptable alternative.

    · Requested that an official transcript be sent directly to Logan University from the institution awarding the qualifying entrance degree. If the applicant attended multiple institutions, an official transcript must be sent from each institution directly to Logan.

    · Earned a minimum cumulative grade point average of a 3.0 on a 4.0 scale in his or her qualifying bachelor’s degree.

    · An applicant with qualifying post undergraduate coursework may have those courses and cumulative GPA re-evaluated by the Admissions Committee.

    · Completion of a personal statement (up to 750 words) to include:

    o Why Logan?

    o Any experience in the nutrition field?

    o Why do you want to become an RD?

    o Short term and long term goals

    · Two letters of recommendation: One letter of recommendation from a current or former employer, and one letter of recommendation from a current or former instructor

    * An international student seeking admission to Logan must provide the following documentation in addition to other admissions requirements:

    · Proficiency in English. Students who have not earned the equivalent of a baccalaureate degree taught in English are required to submit a Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) score. TOEFL scores of 500 or higher on paper- based exams or 79 on the iBT Test are acceptable. A breakdown of the sub-scores for the iBT Test can be found in the Academic Catalog (p. 20).

    · Completed the prerequisite coursework listed below from an accredited institution with grades of C (2.5 on a 4.0 scale) or higher in each course.

    · Prerequisites must be completed by the end of the prior spring semester for a fall entrance, and by the end of the summer prior for a spring entrance

  • Curriculum

    Students will earn an MS upon successful completion of the 36 -39 semester credit hour program. Receipt of degree is dependent upon successful completion of the requirements for graduation with a grade of B or better. Furthermore, students must earn a C or better on assignments within courses to demonstrate competency. Remediation will be required for those competencies not meeting criteria. Graduates are eligible to take the Commission on Dietetic Registration’s (CDR) Credentialing Examination for Dietitian Nutritionists.

    Upon completion of this program, will I be eligible to sit for the RD exam?

    Yes, once you complete the program you will receive a verification statement that you are eligible to take the RD exam.

    I am already in the Nutrition program, can I change to the RD track?

    No, you will need to apply submit an application for the MS-NHP RD track and be evaluated with all of the other applicants. You will have to drop the program first, and re-apply. If you are not one of the top 15 applicants, you may re-enter the MS NHP the next trimester to continue with your nutrition degree.

    If I have already completed some of the courses in the MSNHP program will these count towards the RD track?

    It depends on when you took the courses. Some of the courses have been revised to include ACEND competencies so they may have to be repeated if you took them before the course revision.

    Can I do my supervised practice hours closer to where I live?

    Right now, we are only set up to have students complete their rotations in St. Louis. That may become an option in the future however.

    How many hours will the supervised practice hours be per week?

    You should plan on approximately 30 hours per week when you are completing the supervised practice hours.

    I graduated with a BA, do I need a BS to apply?

    You need a Bachelor’s degree to apply. Both degrees are acceptable as long as you have completed the required prerequisite courses listed in the Admissions tab.

    If I don’t receive a C on an assignment will I be dropped from the program?

    If you receive a C on an assignment associated with a competency, you will be assigned a remediation plan to allow you to demonstrate competence.

    What type of settings will I be doing the supervised experiential learning (SEL) in?

    SEL will be completed in clinical, community, health education, food service, and sports and fitness facilities.

    If I don’t get into the program in the Fall can I apply again in the Spring?

    Yes you can apply again the next trimester as we will be taking the top 15 applicants.

    If I have completed graduate nutrition courses elsewhere, can these be transferred in for credit?

    Since the coursework is tied to competencies, it is very unlikely that courses will be able to be transferred in for credit.

    Do I need to take the GRE?

    No, GREs are not required.

    Are there any courses I need to take prior to beginning the program?

    Yes, you need to complete 3 credit hours (semester) in each of the following categories: Anatomy and Physiology I, Anatomy and Physiology II, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Human Nutrition or equivalent.

    When must I complete the prerequisite courses by?

    The spring semester prior to a fall entrance, or the summer prior to a spring entrance.

    Where can I take the prerequisite courses?

    Any accredited college or university.

    Is there a GPA requirement for my application?

    Yes, a GPA of 3.0 or higher for your bachelor’s degree.
