Logan Sponsors Athletic Events at 2012 Scottish Games and Awards the "Logan Cup" to the Athlete of the Year
October 12, 2012
As part of its ongoing commitment to community service, Logan College of Chiropractic/University Programs served as the sponsor of the athletic events at the 10th Annual Scottish Games and Cultural Festival, held on September 28-29 in St. Louis’ Forest Park.
Professional Scottish athletes competed for cash while amateur Scottish athletes contended for position and to win the Logan Cup presented to the Athlete of the Year. Three Logan students, including last year’s winner Richard Williams, competed in this year’s games. This year, the winner of the “Logan Cup” and declared Athlete of the Year was Dr. Chad Gunsten, an emergency room physician based in Lawrence, Kan.
The Logan Cup, with all the names of past winners written on it, is on display inside the Learning Resources Center on the Logan campus in Chesterfield, Mo., a western suburb of St. Louis. Logan has been a participating sponsor of the Scottish Games since 2004 and exclusive sponsor of the Logan Cup since 2005.
According to Dr. Patrick Montgomery, Logan’s Scottish Games coordinator, 12 Logan interns assisted athletes all-day Saturday in athletic treatment tents under the supervision of Logan clinical faculty. Nineteen Logan students worked on the field assisting the athletes as spotters and shaggers. Logan also provided an information table and spinal screening booth where interns and clinician interacted with hundreds of the estimated 6,000 attendees.
The opening ceremony, held on Friday night, September 28, included the Calling of the Clans. More than 40 clans were represented during the ceremony in front of a crowd estimated to be 3,000 people.
“The Scottish Games provided a great opportunity to showcase Logan’s commitment to community service,” said Dr. Montgomery. “Clinically, it offered Logan student interns the valuable experience of working with athletes on and off the field during a high-level of competition.”
Dave Glasgow, one of three judges at the Scottish Games, commented to Dr. Montgomery on the work of the Logan students. “I am very grateful for the volunteers you brought to help with the games. Their help was over the top and their eagerness is inspiring. If these are examples of the individuals you are instructing at your facility, they you have much to take pride in!”
