On Field Assessment of Injuries  & Risk Management

Instructors:  Kevin McClain, DC and Charles Copeland, DC

This weekend, we present two important topics in the world of chiropractic sports care, taught by two excellent instructors. On Saturday, Dr. Kevin McClain teaches On-Field Assessment of Sports Injuries; and on Sunday ,Dr. Charles Copeland teaches Risk Management for the sports/team physician. These are critical presentations for the chiropractic sports physician whether you are treating professional athletes, college athletes, high school athletes, select-team athletes or weekend warriors. In Dr. McClain’s six-hour presentation, he covers the definition of assessment both pre-game and during the game, and outlines the steps of athletic assessment. He discusses signs and symptoms, observation, history, and primary and secondary surveys. He discusses concussion including the mechanism and symptoms; the classification system for grading a concussion; and the guidelines for returning to participation both side-line and post-game. He discusses spinal injuries including sprains, strains, and complex injuries of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar spine. He also discusses extremity injuries including shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand; and hip, knee, and ankle. He finishes up this comprehensive 6-hour presentation with emergency procedures on-field. He covers ABCs: Airway, Breathing, Circulation. He also covers shock, possible spinal cord injuries – care on-field and call for ambulance, and contusions. That’s a full Saturday of valuable information. On Sunday, Charles Copeland presents Risk Management. In this six-hour session, Dr. Copeland  informs us of the differences in risks between general practice and those associated with that of a sports/team physician. As a team physician one may be held to a higher standard in a particular situation, such as on-field assessment, when compared to that of a general office practice. This session will provide an overview of the medico legal aspects and differences along with documentation strategies to ensure that both participant and team physician are placed at minimal risk. Topics covered in this excellent six-hour presentation include the responsibilities of a team physician, consent issues, pre-participation responsibilities, acute care issues, documentation of encounter, and current trends as seen by liability carriers. Dr. Kevin McClain is a 1992 graduate of Logan College of Chiropractic. He received his CCSP® certification in 1996. Dr. McClain is the co-team physician for McClure North’s High School Football Team. He was awarded the Outstanding Young Missourian by the Jaycees in 2004. He is a member of the American Chiropractic Association, the Missouri State Chiropractors Association, and the Florissant Valley Jaycees. Dr. McClain is currently the Chairman of the Florissant Valley Chamber of Commerce and has twice been named Chiropractor of the Year by that organization. Dr. McClain maintains a busy private practice in Florissant, Missouri. Dr. Charles E. Copeland is a 1995 graduate of Life University in Marietta, Georgia. He is certified in Peer Review and Insurance Consulting, is a medical Coding Specialist-Physician (MCS-P) and is certified by the council on chiropractic Guidelines and Practice Parameters to teach guidelines. He maintains a busy private practice in Louisville, KY.
